Superb shopping at the Madeiran markets

Shopping at the markets of Madeira is surprising for sure, because of the colorful products and the cheerful atmosphere spreading out from the sellers.
The main marketplace in Funchal Mercado dos Lavradores is worth coming in the morning when you can meet the most producers.
The fruit zone certainly deserves the most attention. You can try without limits many local fruits such as sweet bananas, passionfruits in several flavors, a combination of banana and pineapple so called monstera, papaya, dragon fruit and many others.
ATTENTION! Don’t get ripped out and watch out for what you are buying, because often the prices are pricey – a few times higher than those in local stores or in the points on the street.

In the second part of Mercado dos Lavradores you can find fresh fishes caught from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean like the popular black scabbardfish (espada), tuna, salmon and many others.

If you have free Sunday and a car, drive to the north of the island to the Santo da Serra Market, which openes only on Sundays from 9 am to 6 pm. There is a less touristic, you can buy local product and you can feel vibrant atmosphere.
